A Summer of Work & Learning

In the summer of 2002, then-MA Governor Jane Swift visited Battleship Cove to award $91,110 to the Bristol Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to fund the first phase of the "Summer of Work and Learning" program.

Over the past five years, Battleship Cove has been fortunate to host this dynamic program in which the museum worked in concert with local businesses and educators to help at-risk teens pass the challenging MCAS exam—a hurdle that all students must surmount to graduate high school.

Throughout the summer, students join Durfee High School teachers in the BB59 Student Orientation Center for morning academic sessions, and in the afternoons, students assist museum and carousel staff in their professional endeavors, such as administrative support, database management, visitor services, and grounds maintenance (pictured above).
