BATTLESHIP COVE 2008 EVENT CALENDAR

JULY
July 7-18th – Camp Cove (Session #2)
Camp Cove is an eight-week educational and recreational day camp broken down by theme into two-week sessions. Campers are encouraged to participate in all sessions, but may choose to enroll in one, two, or three sessions. Session #2 Theme: Ship Talk: Learn about communications on board a ship; use Morse Code, sound-powered phones, and more!

July 10, 2008 – Seaside Cinema
Sit back and enjoy the 3rd movie of the season, “On the Front Lines: WWII Cartoons 1930’s – 1940’s”. Films are chosen from a list of family favorites and popular films from the WWII era. Guests are welcome to sit on the deck or bring their own chairs. Free admission. $2 donation suggested. Movie time: 8:30 PM

July 21-August 1 – Camp Cove (Session #3)
See July 7th for details. Theme: Wild Blue Yonder: Discover the excitement and power of flight; explore Battleship Cove’s aircraft and create a weather station!

AUGUST
August 2, 2008 - Coast Guard Birthday Celebration
Free admission to all active-duty and retired Coast Guard military personnel throughout the week. Immediate family members will enjoy 50% off admission. In addition, both receive 10% off retail purchases in the Gift Shop.

August 2, 2008 – Family Overnight Camping at Battleship
This value-packed experience provides you with the opportunity to sleep on the USS Massachusetts – a National Historic Landmark – in restored navy bunks, eat meals “chow line style” in the Officer’s Wardroom, and rise and shine to the sound of reveille. Guests will enjoy all-day admission, three delicious meals, and will have the opportunity to participate in shipboard activities. They will also receive a free pass to the Marine Museum, located just two blocks from the Cove. As a special treat during this overnight you’ll experience Fall River’s Fourth of July Fireworks from the decks of the Battleship.

August 4-15th – Camp Cove (Session #4)
See July 7th for details. Theme: Sand & Sea: If the Submarine Lionfish submerged off the coast of MA, what would it encounter? Explore our local coastline under the waves and along the beaches.

August 8- August 10 - Fall River Celebrates America! at Battleship Cove
This three-day event features nearly endless amounts of ethnic edibles, fireworks, and performances of entertainers. The international festival runs throughout the three days and offers Portuguese, Italian, Lebanese, and a score of other cultural crafts and treats. Friday, a naturalization ceremony is held on board the Battleship Massachusetts, and on Saturday a Sailing Challenge will take place at the Battleship Cove Community Boathouse, and is open to the public. On Saturday evening, guests may enjoy a fireworks display from the battleship’s fantail – the best vantage point in the city. Tickets for the fireworks will be on sale prior to the event in the Ship’s Store. Call 508-678-1100 for more information.

September 11, 2008 – Rite of Reflection Ceremony at Battleship Cove
In honor of the seventh anniversary of the nation’s most deadly attack, Battleship Cove will conduct a Remembrance Ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial site with a wreath casting followed by a 21-gun salute at 8:46 AM, the precise time of the first attack. The ceremony is open to the public.

September 14, 2008 – POW/MIA Day at Battleship Cove
A reflective ceremony will be held at 1:00 PM on the battleship in honor of Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Day. The legion’s POW/MIA Committee will sponsor the ceremony.

OCTOBER
October 7, 2008 – USS JOSEPH P. KENNEY JR – 14th Annual Reunion
Friends and former crewmembers of the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr will celebrate the 14th annual reunion of their Gearing-class destroyer, which served with great distinction during the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and NASA’s Space Program. 10 AM memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony are open to the public.

NOVEMBER
November 11, 2008 - Veteran’s Day at Battleship Cove

DECEMBER
December 7, 2008 – Pearl Harbor Day at Battleship Cove
Battleship Cove will commemorate the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by hosting a brief ceremony at 12:55 PM – the exact hour of the Japanese strike. Located on the Battleship Massachusetts, the service will include wreath-casting rites prefaced by brief remarks from Battleship Cove’s executive director. Ceremony is open to the public.

December 7, 2008 – Breakfast with Santa at the Fall River Carousel
Get ready for the season by making plans to attend the Carousel’s Breakfast with Santa from 8 am to noon. Families can enjoy a delicious hot breakfast plus, kids will have fun making special holiday craft, there will be face painting, Carousel rides, and more. Of course, the highlight of the event will be a photo with the jolly old elf himself. Seating is limited, reservations are required!
